ACS Division Newsletter – The Division of Medicinal Chemistry is pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas E. Prisinzano has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 David W. Robertson Award for Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry. This award, supported by Pfizer, Inc., is in memory of David W. Robertson, a widely respected, highly successful and creative medicinal chemist, and is intended to recognize seminal contributions by young scientists to medicinal chemistry. The nominee must have had a primary role in the discovery of a novel therapeutic agent(s), target(s), theoretical concept(s) in medicinal chemistry or drug discovery, and/or made a significant scientific discovery that enhances the field of medicinal chemistry. Thomas E. Prisinzano received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Delaware in 1995 and his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2000. After postdoctoral studies at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases with Dr. Kenner C. Rice, he joined the Division of Medicinal & Natural Products Chemistry at the University of Iowa in 2003. Dr. Prisinzano has received the 2005 D. John Faulkner Travel Award from the American Society of Pharmacognosy, the 2006 Jack L. Beal Award from the Journal of Natural Products, the 2008 Matt Suffness Award from the American Society of Pharmacognosy, and the 2011 Joseph Cochin Young Investigator Award from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Kansas. Dr. Prisinzano has focused on the medicinal chemistry aspects of neuroscience for the past 15 years and is a world-recognized leader in the chemistry of drug abuse. His published work includes many contributions widely recognized as being of fundamental importance to our knowledge of Salvia divinorum and salvinorin A. He is the author or coauthor of 76 peer reviewed manuscripts, 3 published patent applications, and 4 book chapters, virtually all of which are in the field of medicinal and natural products chemistry related to drug abuse research. Dr. Prisinzano will receive the award and present his address at the Fall 2012 ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia.

Registration, abstract submission and housing reservations may all be done from the meeting website (http://www.icnpr2012.org/), linked in the upper right corner of the Society web pages. Deadline for abstract submission is May 11, 2012.

CREO Internships in Panama

The Conservation, Research & Education Opportunities (CREO) program is funded by the Minority Health and Health Disparities International Resaerch Training (MHIRT) Program and places students in labs in Panama for 5-6 month internships. Students conduct research ranging from marine natural products isolation and structure elucidation to cell and molecular biology. Applications due March 30th.
