The role:

The Sr. Manager, Global Product Science & Safety position carries the primary responsibilities of running and mentoring direct reports to grow their capabilities for contributing to the organization, with direct responsibility for science and nutrition input for new product development activities. This position has direct responsibility for products in assigned product categories, including but not limited to Sports and Fitness, Targeted Nutrition and Innovation. The position accountabilities include identifying, documenting and validating the appropriate ingredients, formulations and ingredient characterizations that meet product standards and requirements, including substantiation of health benefits and safety. This position is a hybrid role that includes management and technical responsibilities, using established metrics to track key development & science activities, and will be encouraged to inspire and energize all employees through personal leadership, influence and insightful communication.

 
How you would contribute:
  • Identifies, prioritizes and assembles resources to accomplish department strategies
  • Manages and leads GPSS personnel
  • Regularly interacts with subordinates and/or peers to conduct daily operations
  • Proven track record to resolve conflict among immediate team members independently
  • Suggests training tools to improve employee performance and skill development
  • Monitors team metrics and objectives ensuring meeting of goals
  • Establishes project goals and priorities by collaborating with marketing and operation partners
  • Sets objectives and evaluates direct reports via MBO process
  • Identifies, documents and validates the appropriate ingredients, formulations and ingredient characterizations that meet product standards and requirements for product development purposes
  • Leads preparation of substantiation files establishing health benefits and safety for ingredients and products in areas of assigned product responsibility
  • Attends classes/seminars to improve technical, inter-personnel and managerial skills and is expected to share and apply findings in cross-functional settings and to work assignments
  • Conducts work independently and leads select team collaborative projects

 

Supervisory responsibilities:

  • 3 years experience in management and/or leadership role
 
Skills and background required to be successful:
  • BS degree with a major in a relevant scientific discipline
  • 8+ years experience developing and/or reviewing science-based safety and benefit assessments for foods or nutritional supplements, or relevant experience, including graduate studies
  • 3 years experience in management and/or leadership role
  • Moderate understanding of local or regional product claim regulations and registration requirements
  • Knowledge of New Product Process & development in Product Lifecycle Management (e.g. Agile)
  • Proficient use of MS Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to prioritize and lead science team to successful outcome for areas of business interest or to address stakeholder requests
  • Proven results and experience in coaching, developing and mentoring staff while encouraging and initiating action plans for development. Can initiate crucial conversations independently.
  • Competency in setting short- and long-term objectives for immediate staff, creating professional development plans and evaluating performance against objectives and competencies
  • Nutritional and/or botanical science expertise for formulation development and creation of substantiation files in relevant food/dietary supplement industries
  • Has capacity to interact effectively at all levels of organization with sensitivity to diversity
  • Possesses strong written and persuasive verbal communication skills
  • Broad experience base in functional areas that interact with GPSS, such as R&D Formulation, QA, Regulatory, Marketing, Scientific Affairs and Government Affairs
