The Kellogg Laboratory in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Penn State has an exciting opportunity for an individual interested in a Research Technologist position. Our research focuses on developing and applying metabolomics approaches to improve our understanding of bioactive natural products and chemical ecology.
The candidate will perform a range of duties, including bacterial and/or fungal culture and assays, chemical and biological sample preparation, chemical separation, data acquisition, instrumental analysis (LC-MS and NMR) and data interpretation. They will be responsible for maintaining culture stocks, and managing general laboratory operations such as ordering supplies, tracking expenses, keeping the lab up-to-date and compliant with institutional guidelines, and helping train personnel/students in laboratory techniques. The ideal candidate will have good organizational skills and motivation to learn new techniques, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and a successful candidate will be expected to function independently. Most importantly, the candidate will have a willingness and ability to contribute to a team-oriented research environment, having a positive attitude that promotes and facilitates the success of everyone in the lab.
Qualifications: This job will be filled as a level 1, or level 2, depending upon the successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience. Level 1 typically requires a BS or higher plus one year of related experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for level 2 placement. Experience in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or related field is needed, and skills in cell culture, chemical extraction and chemistry instrumentation, or bioinformatics/statistics are advantageous.
