GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees. In the frame of the EU Horizon 2020 funded project SUMMER (Sustainable Management of Mesopelagic Resources, https://summerh2020.eu), GEOMAR Research Unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry / GEOMAR Centre for Marine Biotechnology is offering a 3-year position for a Post-Doctoral position in Marine Microbial Natural Product Chemistry, starting on 1st September 2021.The mesopelagic zone (twilight zone) covers the depths between 200 to 1000 m below the ocean surface, and is one of the least understood ecosystems. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced post-doctoral researcher with clearly demonstrated expertise in microbial natural product chemistry to assess the pharmaceutical potential of marine mesopelagic microorganisms. The holder of this post will perform a range of research tasks including sampling, isolation, taxonomical identification, cultivation and extraction of microorganisms associated with mesopelagic organisms, followed by LCMS-MS-based metabolomics, fractionation, bioactivity-guided isolation and structure elucidation of their bioactive molecules by modern analytical methods. The research unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry is equipped with state-of-the-art chemical facilities including in-house UPLC-QTOF-MS coupled with DESI Imaging Mass Spectrometry, HPLC-DAD-MS, HPLC-HRMS, GC-MS, automated extraction systems such as Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) and Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), FT-IR, polarimeter and related databases, as well as excellent microbiology / biotechnology facilities and over 70 running in vitro biological assays. Our in-house microbial culturing facilities span from small (1 L) to large-scale (300 L fermenter), as well as access to sequencing facilities. GEOMAR has full access to high-resolution (cryo-) NMR facilities at the Chemistry Department of Kiel University. We lead or participate large EU or national research projects.
