The Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering (MBBE) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) invites applicants for a tenure track position in plant biochemistry at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 1, 2023.
The department seeks candidates whose research is centered on plant biochemistry. Candidates with multi/interdisciplinary research experience (e.g., with bioengineering) are encouraged to apply. The course assignments will include undergraduate biochemistry courses and a graduate course in plant biochemistry. Qualified candidates shall possess a promising record of scholarships, a strong research agenda, and be able to support students through advising as well as mentorship. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates among different demographics.

The Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering (MBBE) is involved in teaching, innovation and application of modern technology for agricultural and industrial development in Hawai‘i. We teach Biological Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, Bioinformatics, and Biotechnology, with the understanding that together these subjects support the foundation of new technologies to advance human needs. The faculty conduct innovative research on crops, snails, and microbes, isolate novel and useful bioactive molecules, and make improvements in these molecules using recombinant technology and biochemical methods. MBBE faculty also work to develop disease resistance in Hawai‘i’s agriculturally important plants and crops in collaboration with biological engineering faculty to creatively manipulate biomolecules and biological systems for addressing the next challenges in Hawai‘i.
The MBBE graduate program continues to be successful at intercollege, interdisciplinary collaborations with the John A. Burns School of Medicine, Cancer Center, College of Natural Sciences, Hawai‘i Natural Energy Institute, Sea Grant program, Hawai‘i Agriculture Research Center and other college departments to train our next generation of researchers and educators with Ph.D. and M.S. degrees. The goal of the program is to prepare a well-trained workforce for Hawai‘i and beyond.

- Teaches undergraduate courses such as Essential Biochemistry, Principles of Biochemistry, Biochemistry Laboratory and/or the graduate course Plant Biochemistry. Courses may vary depending on the needs of the department and students
- Develops new undergraduate and/or graduate course(s) in the Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering Department
- Actively participates in undergraduate and graduate advising and student recruitment
- Establishes and sustains an independent and externally funded research program in plant biochemistry on one or more topics, such as biologically active phytochemicals, photosynthesis, enzymology, stress adaptation, metabolomics, secondary metabolites, metabolic flux, biochemical signaling, and natural products
- Works collaboratively with the department, college colleagues, and scientists at other institutions
- Provides service to the department, college, university, and community
- A doctorate in biochemistry or molecular biology with an emphasis on plant biochemistry from a college or university of recognized standing.
- The ability to effectively teach and mentor a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students

- Post-doctoral experience moving towards independency
- Previous teaching experience in the university classroom or laboratory setting
