ASP Fine Art Competition

February 19, 2019 by pharmacognosy

Call for Submissions

The American Society of Pharmacognosy, an organization dedicated to the discovery of new drugs and other applications of natural products science, initiated an annual art competition beginning in 2016. We are happy to continue this new tradition with this call for submissions for the 2019 competition.

The American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) was founded in 1959 to “promote the growth and development of pharmacognosy, to provide the opportunity for association among workers in the science, to provide opportunities for presentation of research achievements, and to promote the publication of meritorious research.”

Over the past 60 years, the ASP has grown and extended its reach to include hundreds of members committed to promoting and developing the science of pharmacognosy and all aspects natural products research. The organization’s members have made significant advances that improve the heath and well being of people around the world. Approximately 50% of all lifesaving drugs were first derived through natural products research.

To help fill the demand for young scientists to enter and advance the field, the ASP is embarking on expanded outreach efforts. Our goal is to reach students on college campuses with a message about how they can make an impact through the science of natural products research. As part of this effort, we are commissioning and showcasing artwork with themes related to natural plant and biological organisms.

We are seeking artists to submit biographies and sample work to this review. The selected artist will be commissioned to produce a limited edition of 100 signed and numbered prints from a commissioned image that will represent the scientific achievements of award winning ASP members. There will be two winners selected, one for the Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement award and one for the Varro E. Tyler Prize. The work will be showcased on the ASP website, the ASP Newsletter, at ASP events and will be kept at the Lloyd Library In Cincinnati as part of the ASP Archives.

Winning artists will be paid $1,500 to produce the artwork and 100 signed numbered prints.  The ASP will also pay for shipping the prints to a site determined by the ASP. There is no entry fee.

This effort will help the ASP bring new scientists to a field that is saving lives every day. We hope you will consider participating in this competition.

Fast Facts:

  • Submissions are due by March 30th. A selection will be made by April 15th.
  • Interested artists are invited to submit biographies and non-returnable digital work examples to businessmanager@pharmacognosy.us
  • Two separate potential artworks must be submitted for approval by May 31st. The ASP will select one option for the final artwork.
