A. Douglas Kinghorn received degrees from the Universities of Bradford (B. Pharm., 1969), Strathclyde (M.Sc., 1970), and London (Ph.D. Pharmacognosy, 1975; advisor, the late Fred Evans; D.Sc. Pharmacy, 1990). He was awarded an Honorary D.Sc. degree by the University of Bradford in 2011. After postdocs at Ole Miss and Univ. Illinois at Chicago (UIC), he quickly rose through the UIC ranks to full Professor (1986), and also served in various administrative roles, including Asst. Department Head (1995-2004). He has held Visiting Professorships at ETH-Zurich (1990), the University of Salerno (1996), and the University of Sao Paulo (1997). In 2004, he was appointed Professor and Jack L. Beal Chair in Natural Products Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, College of Pharmacy, The Ohio State University (OSU). His research has focused on the isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds from plants and botanical dietary supplements, comprising cancer chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agents, antileishmanials, and noncariogenic sweeteners and sweetness modifiers. Since 1988, he has served as a frequent NIH grant reviewer, including chartered membership of two Study Sections, and from 2005-2010, was Chair of the Dietary Supplements-Botanicals Expert Committee of the U.S. Pharmacopeia. Among his awards and honors, he is a Fellow of the Linnean Soc. of London, the Royal Pharmaceutical Soc. of Great Britain, the AAPS, the AAAS, and the School of Pharmacy, Univ. of London, and is an Honorary Member of the Phytochemical Society of Asia (PSA). He served as President of the Soc. of Economic Botany (1991-1992). He was named as B. Kenneth West University Scholar (1993-1996; Univ. Illinois Foundation), and received the UIC Award for Excellence in Teaching (2002-2003), and was designated as an OSU Distinguished Scholar Awardee (2016). He is a recipient of both the Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement Award of ASP (2010) and the Egon Stahl Award in Gold from GA (Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research) (2020). He was Editor-in-Chief of J. Nat. Prod. from 1994 to 2019, and is serving as a Series Editor for Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products (Springer Nature), and is on the Advisory Boards of about 20 other scientific journals. He has published over 600 scientific papers, book chapters, and edited volumes, and has supervised some 50 graduate students and 70 postdocs and visiting scholars. (ADK)
