Job Description - The Carlson Lab in the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences Program at University of the Pacific seeks a masters or doctorate student starting for the fall semester of 2023. The focus areas of this laboratory are Bioanalytical Chemistry and Drug Discovery. Details on focus areas and program details can be found on the program website below. The candidate is expected to isolate and identify natural products, develop a command of NMR experiments and sterile technique, master chromatography, biosynthesis, and structure elucidation. Some molecular biology will be required to identify microbial isolates that produce biologically active molecules. Doctoral students interested in natural product metabolomics are specifically sought.The ideal candidate should feel at home at a small institution and be willing to put significant time and effort into good teaching practices. However, proximity to the Bay area (San Francisco, a major biotech research and drug discovery hub) makes this a great opportunity for those looking for an industry focused master’s degree and launching point. Responsibilities - In addition to maintaining good standing in graduate coursework and completing laboratory research, teaching will be a large component of the position. As a small liberal arts school, the University of the Pacific prides itself in the undergraduate learning experience. The candidate will lead research experiences for undergraduates in the research lab and will be required to develop their own independent mentorship style. This position is currently fully funded through teaching assistantships that will provide abundant teaching experience in the classroom.
