Description

Job Description - The Ecotoxicology Research Program at Mote Marine Laboratory is seeking a full-time Research Technician to join our team. We investigate effects of environmental pollutants and bioactive compounds on marine wildlife, marine ecosystems, and human health using the tools of analytical chemistry, exposure science, toxicology, and molecular biology. Current projects involve monitoring contaminants in the environment, understanding how contaminants affect animal, human, and ecosystem health, exploring ways to mitigate harm caused by toxic substances, and investigating bioactive compounds for their ability to bind therapeutic targets. Key topics of research include harmful algae bloom toxicity and mitigation; sources and fate of chemicals in water, air, and organisms; and mechanisms of action of harmful substances on cells and organisms. Work will involve a broad range of research projects encompassing controlled laboratory conditions as well as natural field studies.

Responsibilities - Required skills/knowledge:General lab safetyExperience with protocol development and optimizationProficiency with pipetting, calculating dilutions/dosesExperience with statistical analyses and data interpretation using Excel and other softwareExperience with molecular biology including protein extraction, DNA extraction, and/or real-time PCRExceptional time management, troubleshooting, and organizational skillsAbility to be an adaptable and collegial member of the team, self-motivated, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner. Physically able to lift 50 pounds and remain standing/walking for multiple hours a da. Preferred qualifications:Experience with chemical extraction techniques. Experience with mammalian cell culture and cytotoxicity assays. Experience with analytical and semi-preparative HPLC, HRMS, or MS/MS, Experience working with hazardous materials

Qualifications - Minimum qualifications:Education – Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Marine Science or related field, Experience – Employment, internship, or a substantial amount of volunteer hours in a researchlaboratory or related institution is required.
