We have an opportunity for a talented and innovative candidate to fill a full-time Senior Scientist / Principal Scientist position in the Structure Elucidation Group (SEG) at Genentech’s South San Francisco site. The SEG, part of the Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutical Sciences (SMPS) department, utilizes advanced analytical techniques including high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to support activities in a myriad of pharmaceutical research projects.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will implement new technologies and adapt existing ones to support the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of significant unmet medical needs. This individual will work collaboratively with scientists across our analytical, process chemistry, and pharmaceutics groups to advance drug substance and drug product development. The successful candidate will be excited by research at the cutting edge of HRMS and NMR technologies, be able to identify new applications of spectroscopy techniques to complex structure elucidation problems, and ultimately drive innovation to solve those problems. The candidate must have the ability to independently design, plan, and execute protocols to resolve issues related to structure identification of unknown substances. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a record of scientific contributions as determined by consistent publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national scientific conferences. Qualifications

The successful candidate will have most of the following attributes. The level of the position will depend on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, natural products, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or other related scientific fields with three to ten years of relevant pharmaceutical experience.
  • Experience with both traditional small molecules and new chemical modalities would be beneficial.
  • A strong background in organic chemistry and/or natural products identification is required.
  • A strong desire to work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Experience with modern NMR analysis (for example, qNMR, small-molecule structure elucidation, biomolecular and/or polymer analysis).
  • Broad experience with HRMS techniques and the application of those techniques to the elucidation of unknown chemical structures.
  • Experience with computational methods as applied to molecular spectroscopy and structure.
  • Evidence of sustained productivity and independent contributions in science, as demonstrated by a strong publication and presentation record.
  • Be highly organized, motivated, work collaborative with a strong sense of individual accountability.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience preparing investigation new drug (IND) structural proof documentation would be beneficial but not required.
Job Benefits

Please note: The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $119,600 to $222,200 (Senior level) or $143,100 to $265,700 (Principal level). Annual Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
