I am profoundly moved and honored to have this opportunity to serve the ASP as president. The ASP has been an anchor like no other for me since shortly after I arrived in the United States from Zimbabwe, twenty-one years ago now. The stated mission of the American Society of Pharmacognosy is “to promote and develop the science of pharmacognosy and all aspects of those sciences related to natural products.”
We are saddened at the passing of colleague, mentor and friend George ‘Bob’ Pettit: a giant in the field, who devoted 60+ years to finding cures for cancer and brought tremendous visibility and continuing impact on natural products research. https://news.asu.edu/20210924-memoriam-regents-professor-george-bob-pettit
Dr. Cassandra Quave looks at her adventures in natural product and ethnobotany fieldwork through the lens of bringing a family, as well as with a prosthetic leg.
If you would like to work with one of the most widely used plant medicines in the country and enjoy the opportunity to directly impact patient health and product development, I recommend pursuing a career in the cannabis industry. There are several ways scientists with a pharmacognosy background can get involved in the field.

The American Society of Pharmacognosy was founded in 1959 as a society international in scope dedicated to the promotion, growth, and development of pharmacognosy and all aspects of natural products sciences.
