The field of pharmacognosy aims to study molecules from plants and other living things, that potentially have medicinal uses. Such molecules are the products of evolution, and can have intricate structures and previously unknown biological effects. ASP members are involved in a number of activities - including isolating new molecules and determining their chemical structure, finding out how they are made by the producing organism, and why they evolved. Another aspect of pharmacognosy is the scientific investigation of preparations used in traditional systems of medicine - often termed ethnopharmacology. The field of pharmacognosy therefore encompasses areas of chemistry, biochemistry, genomics, ecology and anthropology.

Erin Conley interviews Dr. Leslie Hicks and PhD candidate Kevin Culver (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) about their work on ghost peppers and potential antimicrobial peptides. The ghost pepper, one of the hottest ever grown, produced two novel antimicrobial peptides which were characterized by the lab. Erin also dives into the lab’s culture, working outside of academia, and the lab mascot.

Dr. Li started his independent career as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina in January of 2019. He has co-authored more than 40 scientific papers and is a member of the planning committee for the 2022 ASP Annual Meeting in Charleston, South Carolina.

Read MoreIn the February 2021 ASP Newsletter I commented on and gave “potted precises” of the work done on large scale repurposing of known drugs in order to try to “short-circuit” the time required to test, and hopefully bring to market, a number of potential candidates as drugs, ideally delivered orally.…However, in a very recent article in Science both sets of authors in a joint paper demonstrated that a significant proportion of the compounds identified, including a number of those “pushed by various political figures” in the early stages of the “pandemic,” were artifacts in terms of being antiviral agents and/or leads thereto.
